Hannah the Illustrator
My illustration work combines accurate detail with expressive, energetic brushwork. Working primarily in watercolour, pencil and ink, my style is adaptable. Organic and lifelike — perfectly imperfect, full of movement and personality.
I thrive from the variety of work I do, from children’s books to editorial work, it keeps me on my toes, interested and engaged. Quite often I will be working on a children’s book over a few months, its important to give enough time to develop characters, colour pallets and the flow of a story. I find this is perfect to fit in shorter editorial pieces along side.
My education in the Arts began with a Foundation course in Brighton, followed by a degree in Illustration at Falmouth School of Art. After graduating I went straight into a full time job as an in house Illustrator for Hallmark Cards in Bath. This played as an extension to my education, as I was able to work on a huge variety of projects. But after 3 years, I took the plunge to go solo and haven’t looked back.
Throughout my career I have been fortunate enough to work collaboratively with clients around the world, creating illustrations for picture books, book covers, magazines as well as global advertising campaigns.
“Traditional skills sit at the core of my practice, and drawing remains the foundation of everything I create”
Here I am drawing as a young girl. I had a pretty quirky upbringing. Surrounded by highly creative individuals in a house with no heating and an oak woodland to run wild in. Woodland folk we were called!
My sketchbooks and picture book illustrations are most often nostalgic nods to this childhood. The feeling of being bored, creating something from nothing and the thrilling adventures that organically followed.
Hannah the Artist
Over the past few years, I have been curious to paint. When I’m not working to illustration deadlines, I spend my time outdoors, painting from life.
Often working across several canvases at once, I try to paint super quick. Responding to my surroundings in a lyrical sense, chasing energy and light above all else.
